Stains-All
Stains-All (CAS 7423-31-6), with the empirical formula C30H27BrN2S2 and a molecular weight of 559.58, is a specialised dye used for differential staining in molecular biology. It effectively stains nucleic acids and proteins, with distinct colourations for RNA (bluish purple), DNA (blue), and proteins (red). Its high sensitivity allows for the detection of as little as 3 ng of DNA fragments on polyacrylamide gels. This reagent is supplied by Tech Serve Solutions for laboratory research purposes.
- IUPAC
- 1-Ethyl-2-[3-(1-ethylnaphtho[1,2-d]thiazolin-2-ylidene)-2-methylpropenyl]naphtho[1,2-d]thiazolium bromide,3,3′-Diethyl-9-methyl-4,5,4′,5′-dibenzothiacarbocyanine

Nucleic Acid Staining
Stains-All is employed to differentiate and visualise RNA (bluish purple) and DNA (blue) after electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gels. It is sensitive enough to detect very small quantities of DNA fragments.
Protein Staining
This stain provides a distinct red colouration for proteins, enabling their visualisation on gels following electrophoretic separation. It is useful in proteomic studies and general protein analysis.
Electrophoresis Analysis
Used in various electrophoresis techniques, including protein electrophoresis, Stains-All aids in the differential analysis of biomolecules after separation. The staining and destaining process requires controlled light exposure.

| Application | Stains-all is suitable for differential staining of nucleic acids and proteins as follows; RNA (bluish purple), DNA (blue) and proteins (red). As little as 3 ng (123 BP fragment) of pBR322/Hae III digest DNA and 90 ng tRNA can be detected on a polyacrylamide gel. PAGE gels are stained in the dark and then destaining by removing the gel from the staining solution and exposing it to the light from a light box until sufficient destaining has occurred. A staining solution is typically made by dissolving the dye in formamide and buffer. |
