Bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene)rhodium(I) trifluoromethanesulfonate

CAS 99326-34-8C17H24F3O3RhSCatalysis & Inorganic

Bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene)rhodium(I) trifluoromethanesulfonate (CAS 99326-34-8), commonly known as [Rh(cod)2]OTf, is a cationic organorhodium(I) complex with the empirical formula C17H24F3O3RhS and a molecular weight of 468.34 g/mol. Two 1,5-cyclooctadiene ligands and a weakly coordinating triflate counterion make it a versatile, readily ligand-exchanged precatalyst widely used in homogeneous catalysis, including asymmetric hydrogenation and cross-coupling chemistry. Tech Serve Solutions supplies it at 98% assay.

01 /Applications

Cationic precatalyst for homogeneous catalysis

The weakly coordinating triflate anion and labile cyclooctadiene ligands make this a convenient cationic rhodium(I) source. Combined with phosphine or other donor ligands in situ, it generates active catalysts for a range of homogeneous transformations.

Asymmetric hydrogenation

Used with chiral bisphosphine ligands to assemble cationic rhodium catalysts for enantioselective hydrogenation of prochiral alkenes, enamides and related substrates. It is marketed within the Umicore precatalyst range for asymmetric catalysis.

Cross-coupling and C–C bond formation

Serves as a rhodium precursor in cross-coupling and related carbon–carbon bond-forming reactions. The 1,5-cyclooctadiene ligands are readily displaced to expose reactive coordination sites for catalysis.

Research and method development

Employed in academic and industrial laboratories as a defined, single-source rhodium(I) precatalyst for screening ligands and developing new catalytic methodology in organic synthesis.
