NbSe2 is a layered hexagonal metal dichalcogenide with metallic properties and a large work function. This makes it a potential candidate as back contact material for thin film solar cells.

Layered materials have drawn considerable attention because of their possible exfoliation into single and multilayer 2-dimensional sheets. Because of strong surface effects, the properties of these materials vary drastically with the nunber of layers in a sheet.
